The production of M5A1 tanks started in September 1942, when on hulls of M5 tanks, equipped with D58101 turrets designed for the M3A1 tank, factories started mounting new turrets type D59965, equipped with the niche for the radio station. The driving unit of the M5A1 tank constituted the unit of two 8-cylinder car Cadillac V-engines.
