The production of M5A1 tanks started in September 1942, when on hulls of M5 tanks, equipped with D58101 turrets designed for the M3A1 tank, factories started mounting new turrets type D59965, according to British experience equipped with the niche for the radio station. This let for the change of the arrangement of tank battle compartment and equipping the turret with "basket" for three crew members located in it. The driving unit of the M5A1 tank constituted the unit of two 8-cylinder car Cadillac V-engines coupled with automatic transmission Hydra-Matic, also becoming from the commercial construction for automotive industry. In such way raised the vehicle much quieter, with power unit easier to cooling, and above all, incredibly easy to drive.
